Growing up in Akron, OH, Mark’s main sports were baseball and basketball up through high school. He didn’t start running until age 23 and then only ran and raced sporadically. He got into road cycling and raced competitively in the Cat 3 and Masters categories throughout the 1990s. He began to get back into running in 2001, increasing training frequency and mileage. He’s completed over 20 marathons and set all lifetime PRs from 5k-marathon distances at either age 49 or 50. He ran indoor track for the first time training for the 2018 Master’s Indoor Championships in the DC area. Since then, he’s increasingly focused on getting faster at the shorter distances from 5k down to 800.
Mark lives in Derwood, MD with his wife Sharon. They have three adult children and are almost empty nesters with the youngest currently attending UMD in College Park. Professionally, Mark is retired from the Federal Govt and now working as a Federal Govt contractor in the systems engineering and integration field.
A hunger for learning and improving on training, along with a fire to compete and years of consistency have contributed to Mark’s success.
