Shadow Project is a member-run and organized men's racing team of top masters (30+ yrs old) runners from the Washington DC area with the goal of competing successfully at regional, national, and international competitions. Our training and racing emphasizes middle distance track, having produced several USATF National Champion and podium placers in distances from 800M to 5000M. We also compete in regional and national road races and cross country events.
Most of the members of our club are from the DC metro area. When we can, we meet up for group workouts several times a month, typically in Virginia, Maryland, or DC. During workouts, groups are organized as middle distance (400M - 1500M) and distance (1500M - 5K).
Most athletes place at or near the top of their age groups, with performances at or above 80% age grading. If you are up to the challenge, please contact us. We are open to anyone who wants to join us on workouts.
Our athletes are either self-coached or work with coaches. Two coaches include: Alex Amankwah, a professional middle distance athlete based in Baltimore, and Sam Sharp, a USATF level 2 certified endurance coach and a member of our team, based in Alexandria, VA.
Since its start in 2021, Shadow Project has had success in major meets and races, with several breakthrough performances and personal records. This success comes from a combination of talent and a motivating team chemistry. Below are highlights.
In 2023, Shadow Project's success has continued. Three highlights include: two members competing in the World Masters Indoor Championships in Torun, Poland, Shadow Project winning the 4 x 400M Penn Relays (40-44), and Eleven podium (top 3) finishes at the USATF Outdoor Masters Track and Field Championships.

April 27, 2023 Penn Relays (40+) 4 x 400 m ! The Shadow Project took home the win! Mark Walchinsky led off with a 57.77, Jason Abbott ran the second leg in 57.00, Scott Wallace ran the third leg in 56.75, and James Coates anchored in a blistering 55.90! Impressive, especially since these guys are all middle distance specialists!
